Plain-language glossary
Keep these definitions beside your practice work.
- Agency fee
- What a client pays for your agreed work. Keep it separate from the media budget paid to the advertising platform.
- Media budget
- Money allocated to ad delivery. It is not the agency’s fee or profit.
- Scope
- The agreed work, quantities, exclusions, responsibilities, and approval points. A change to scope may change cost or timing.
- Conversion
- A defined action, such as a purchase or qualified inquiry. State which event you count before interpreting a result.
- CPC · cost per click
- Ad spend divided by clicks. For $200 spend and 100 clicks, CPC is $2. With no clicks it is unavailable.
- CPM · cost per thousand impressions
- Ad spend divided by impressions, multiplied by 1,000. An impression is an ad display, not a unique person or a sale.
- Click-based conversion rate
- Conversions in a click-based dataset divided by its clicks, multiplied by 100. Do not divide a mixed view-through and click-through conversion total by clicks.
- Media CPA · cost per action
- Ad spend divided by the specified conversions. $200 and two purchases gives $100 per purchase; with zero purchases CPA is unavailable. Agency fees and other costs are excluded.
- Attribution
- The rules and time windows used to credit an action to an ad interaction. A reported conversion does not by itself prove the ad caused the sale.
- Data maturity
- Whether enough time has passed for reporting delays, attribution windows, refunds, and other relevant outcomes to settle.
- Context hint
- A description of situations where an ad could be relevant. It informs delivery; it does not guarantee a particular conversation, person, or placement.
- ROAS · return on ad spend
- Attributed revenue divided by ad spend. It excludes costs such as product delivery and agency work, so it is not a profit measure.
- Contribution
- Revenue less the variable costs you explicitly include. State those costs and whether media and fees are included before using it to plan a budget.
- Gross margin
- Revenue minus the defined delivery cost, divided by revenue. With $400 delivery cost and a 20% margin assumption, fee = $400 ÷ (1 − 0.20) = $500. Margin is not markup or take-home profit.
- Pilot
- A bounded trial with a question, approved scope and budget, measurement checks, and stop criteria. A pilot can reasonably end in a recommendation to pause.
